Umbrian Fresh - Cantina Colle Ciocco

(Sign up to receive Open Tuesday offers like this one by text or by email.)

Wine friends,

Last spring’s Colle Ciocco offer included the following quote from esteemed wine writer, W. Blake Gray:

Colle Ciocco isn't exported to the U.S., so only in Europe and Japan can you enjoy this intense, complex character of blackberries, leather, tobacco and floral notes. Nice freshness.”

Mr. Gray’s comments referred to Colle Ciocco’s Sagrantino, the 2017 vintage of which Open Tuesday members loved.

Today we have a juicier vintage, 2018, and I like this Sagrantino slightly better.

Our price is the same as last year, but it’s going to be tough to keep it this low next year. Word is getting out on Colle Ciocco…the Sagrantino is now being imported to some U.S. states.

Online, it’s selling for about $20 more than our OT price.

Today’s offer also includes a new vintage of Colle Ciocco’s stellar Trebbiano Spoletino (white), the award-winning 2021.

Last but not least, we have the OT debut of Colle Ciocco’s fresh and vigorous Brixio rosé (rosato in Italian), from the 2023 vintage. The bottles you order today will be delivered in late April, a great time of the year to sip on a food-friendly rosato like this one.

Cantina Colle Ciocco - 2018 Montefalco Sagrantino

Colle Ciocco’s 2018 Sagrantino Montefalco is a full-bodied red that’s far fresher and more approachable than other Sagrantino examples on the market, especially at this price. This wine gives you fruit purity, nice flavor depth, and resolved tannins, with no oak in sight. Flavor notes include black cherry, tobacco, and black pepper. It’s definitely a wine that improves with air and food, especially Umbrian food.

Bonus Wines

Cantina Colle Ciocco - 2021 Trebbiano Spoletino Tempestivo

The 2021 Colle Ciocco Trebbiano Spoletino is a complex fuller-bodied white wine with a flinty mineral backbone and pretty notes of spiced peach fruit, hazelnut, and mediterranean herbs. Compared to the 2020 version we offered last spring, the 2021 fruit is a bit rounder, yet the wine maintains freshness and focus, with slightly more length on the palate.

Cantina Colle Ciocco - 2023 Vino Rosato Brixio

Colle Ciocco’s 2023 Brixio is a highly drinkable, refreshing rosé, with a firm backbone and sneaky flavor depth. It shows moderately grippy tannins and notes of orange, forest fruit, and nuts. There’s an underlying zing of acidity that makes this a great candidate for outdoor dining and appetizers.

Both bonus wines are otherwise only available in Europe.

To order, just click the one of the blue links above and follow the prompts.

Colle Ciocco produces about seven thousand bottles of Sagrantino a year, about two thousand bottles of Brixio Rosato, and about six thousand bottles of Tempestivo Trebbiano Spoletino.

Here’s Cantina Colle Ciocco on the map of central Italy.

Check out the spectacular scenery in this video taken on the property.

Food pairing: This Trebbiano Spoletino would be ideal with fine cuisine dishes based on fish. It’s also a terrific match for soups with legumes, and risotto agli asparagi (Italian rice with asparagus.) The Sagrantino is probably the least versatile of the three wines, but it’s fantastic with red meat or game. Aged cheeses work too, but nothing spicy or herbal.

Happy Tuesday,

Chris

Receive a $25 credit for every referred member after the purchase of their first bottle.

How it works:

After clicking one of the links above, you’ll be able to request 1-12 bottles. Actually, that’s all you have to do!

About a week later, when we close the offer, you’ll get an email confirming how many bottles we allocated to your account. We will charge you when the wines are allocated.

We’ll do our best to allocate all the bottles you request. When there are more requests than bottles available, we’ll allocate one bottle to all requesting members before allocating a second bottle to anyone. We want as many members as possible to try these wines.

This is the 11th offer of our 2024 spring season. Through the end of March, we will send 2-3 offers per week, with a total of 18 offers planned.

We ship in increments of 12. With 16-18 offers this season, there should be plenty of chances to get to 12, 24, or 36. If you don’t have an increment of 12 at the end of the fall season offers, we can hold your wines until the next offer season.

Wines offered in the spring will ship in April for $5 per bottle (if you have an increment of 12.) This is about the same as the price to ship coast-to-coast within the U.S. – but our wines come directly from Italy.

Once your payment method is on file, you can make future requests with just a few clicks from the offer email. If you don’t have a card on file, you can add one during your first order. Your personal financial information is protected by Stripe.
