Southern Charm - I Favati

(Sign up to receive Open Tuesday offers like this one by text or by email.)

Wine friends,

I Favati has long been known as one of the top all-around winemaking operations in Southern Italy.

At this point, with all the recent accolades and high scores, it’s time to start talking about this venerable Campania producer as one of the best wine producers in all of Italy.

It’s getting tough to keep track of the awards and decorations. Please check out the I Favati Facebook page for specifics on all the heroics.

In sum, all the Italian wine critics (Gambero Rosso, Bibenda, Slow Wine, Veronelli, etc.) are gushing over the quality and value proposition at I Favati – both whites and reds.

(If you keep scrolling down the I Favati FB page, you may notice the biggest name in U.S. wine journalism also gave today’s Cretarossa red a very favorable score. Perhaps they’ve finally found religion…?)

While we’ve offered I Favati’s Fiano di Avellino in past seasons, this is the first opportunity for OT members to get access to an allocation of their Greco di Tufo. (Other recent vintages of the Greco were from smaller harvests, and I wasn’t able to reserve enough bottles for an offer).

Today’s I Favati Cretarossa Aglianico is from the top-notch 2016 vintage. While this wine has a lot in common with the 2013 many of you ordered last year, I think this 2016 is even more profound and cellar-worthy.

I Favati - 2022 Terrantica Greco di Tufo ($24.95)

I Favati’s 2022 Greco is a steely dry white wine that’s loaded with typical Greco flavor notes like acacia, ripe lemon, and almonds. Generally, I prefer Fiano over Greco. But this year’s I Favati Greco makes me want to reconsider that position. It’s so vibrant and clean – and one of the best Greco wines I’ve ever tasted.

I Favati - 2016 Cretarossa (Aglianico) Irpina Campi Taurasini ($25.95)

I Favati’s 2016 Cretarossa is a structured aglianico-based red wine showing balanced and open-knit notes of dark cherry and pomegranate fruit up front, followed by more subtle hints of cocoa, pepper, and stones. You can open it confidently upon delivery, or lay it down in the cellar for 5-10 more years.

To order, just click one of the blue links above and follow the prompts.

These pictures are from the Cretarossa Aglianico vineyard, near the town of Venticano.

This is I Favati on the map of southern Italy.

Here’s the market elsewhere for today’s 2022 Terrantica Greco di Tufo, and here’s the market for the 2016 Cretarossa Aglianico

As you can see, the lowest prices online for these bottles are about the same as our price today. (If you have access to the New York wine market).

These Open Tuesday bottles will be sent directly from Italy, by air, in a temperature controlled environment. No hot warehouses, and no retail shelves.

Food pairing: I’ve had great luck pairing the Cretarossa with cotoletta sbagliata (fried pork steak). According to Carla Favati, this wine is ideal with roasted meat, game, and aged cheeses.

With the Greco, I’d go with seafood or white meat, but it’s also great as an appetizer or with salumi and cheese. We enjoyed pairing it with Manchego cheese and Prosciutto di Parma a few nights ago.

Happy Tuesday,

Chris

If you have any questions or feedback, please email us: [email protected].

Receive a $25 credit for every referred member after the purchase of their first bottle.

How it works:

After clicking one of the links above, you’ll be able to request 1-12 bottles. Actually, that’s all you have to do!

About a week later, when we close the offer, you’ll get an email confirming how many bottles we allocated to your account. We will charge you when the wines are allocated.

We’ll do our best to allocate all the bottles you request. When there are more requests than bottles available, we’ll allocate one bottle to all requesting members before allocating a second bottle to anyone. We want as many members as possible to try these wines.

This is the 14th offer of our 2024 spring season. Through the end of March, we will send 2-3 offers per week, with a total of 18 offers planned.

We ship in increments of 12. With 18 offers this season, there should be plenty of chances to get to 12, 24, or 36.

If you don’t have an increment of 12 at the end of the season, we can hold your wines until the next offer season.

Wines offered in the spring will ship in April for $5 per bottle (if you have an increment of 12.) This is about the same as the price to ship coast-to-coast within the U.S. – but our wines come directly from Italy.

Once your payment method is on file, you can make future requests with just a few clicks from the offer email. If you don’t have a card on file, you can add one during your first order. Your personal financial information is protected by Stripe.
