Fall 2022 Offer #13: Du Nemu Cheló Rosato

Du Nemu - 2021 Cheló Rosato ($18.95)

Bottom Line - Du Nemu’s Cheló is an incredibly refreshing and graceful rosato (rosé) made in western Liguria, very near Italy’s border with France. As you might expect, this wine has a lot in common with rosé from Provence. Cheló is crisp and pretty, with a firm backbone and subtle flavor depth. I know of no better aperitivo wine, especially at this price.

My notes: “Rosemary and sage with a dash of bright cranberry; pale color; nothing sugary; delicate fruit with an underlying zing of acidity; salinity on the close. Vivacious Mediterranean rosé!”

This wine is not currently available in North America.

Wine friends,

Let’s be honest, Italy is not known for great rosato. That doesn’t mean you can’t find world-class pink wine made in Italy. Indeed you can, but it’s not easy.

The good news? When you do track down a special Italian rosato, the value proposition can be excellent. That’s certainly true of today’s wine, Du Nemu’s Cheló.

France, of course, is known for making great rosé. One of the most iconic French rosés, and definitely my favorite, is Clos Cibonne.

Like our Cheló, Clos Cibonne is produced close to the Mediterranean Sea, along the Riviera. And just like Cheló, Clos Cibonne features the tibouren grape, known as rossese in Italy. (Clos Cibonne has become something of an ambassador for Tibouren wines and tibouren-dominant rosé.)

While Cheló might not show the structure of Clos Cibonne, both wines effortlessly communicate the typical flavors and scents of the region. Just put your nose in a glass of Cheló and breathe in the salty air and herby garrigue. Cheló is a very provencal wine.

In recent years, rossese has found some fame for its role in Liguria’s most highly regarded red wine, Rossese di Dolceacqua. (We plan to offer Du Nemu’s Rossese di Dolceacqua in the spring). Not many Rossese producers currently make a rosato, but if the overall excellence of Cheló is any indication, that might be changing, and soon.

As you can see here, Du Nemu is not much more than a stone’s throw away from the French border

The grape variety known as rossese in Italy originally comes from Greece. It was likely brought to western Liguria, and southern Provence, during Roman times.

The name of this wine, Cheló, is the nickname of winemaker/owner Luca Dallorta’s mother.

Du Nemu produces about 20 thousand bottles of wine per year, one thousand of which are Cheló Rosato.

Food pairing:

In addition to being an ideal aperitivo wine, Cheló would pair well with coniglio alla ligure (Ligurian rabbit), a specialty from the region. Lighter fish dishes based on cod or crab should work well too. I would not want to drink Cheló with anything too saucy or spicy.

How it works:

After clicking one of the links above, you’ll be able to request 1-12 bottles. Actually, that’s all you have to do!

About a week later, when we close the offer, you’ll get an email confirming how many bottles we allocated to your account. We will charge you when the wines are allocated.

We’ll do our best to allocate all the bottles you request. But when there are more requests than bottles available, we’ll allocate one bottle to all requesting members before allocating a second bottle to anyone. We want as many members as possible to try these wines.

This is the X of 18 offers during the fall season. Through the first week of November, we are sending offers on Thursday and Sunday, and the Open Tuesday re-up on Tuesdays.

We ship in increments of 12. With 18 offers this season, there should be plenty of chances to get to 12, 24, or 36. If you don’t have an increment of 12 at the end of the fall season offers, we can hold your wines until the next offer season – spring 2023.

Wines offered in the fall will ship in late November-early December for $5 per bottle (if you have an increment of 12.) This is about the same as the price to ship coast-to-coast within the U.S. – but our wines come directly from Italy.

Once your payment method is on file, you can make future requests with just a few clicks from the offer email. If you don’t have a card on file, you can add one during your first order. Your personal financial information is protected by Stripe.
