Fall Favorite - I Favati

(Sign up to receive Open Tuesday offers like this one by text or by email.)

Wine friends,

I’m pretty excited about today’s offer.

We have an all-time Open Tuesday favorite, I Favati, back with new vintages of their exceptional Pietramara Fiano (white) and Cretarossa Aglianico (red) bottlings.

While Pietramara Fiano is the wine that first drew my attention to I Favati, it’s now clear owner-manager Rosanna Petrozziello runs one of the top all-around winemaking operations in southern Italy.

Her reds, including today’s 2015 Cretarossa, overdeliver every vintage. The Greco di Tufo is always sold out (although I think we might be able to offer a few bottles in the spring). Rosanna’s new rosato, which I also hope to offer soon, is winning awards left and right. (Check out the I Favati Facebook page for specifics.)

Not surprisingly, some of the most respected wine retailers in the U.S. are selling the same two wines I’ve selected for today’s offer.

Check out the market for the Cretarossa 2015 Aglianico

Here’s the Pietramara 2021 Fiano. As you can see, the lowest price elsewhere is about a dollar more than our price today, and that’s if you live in California (or one of the six eligible recipient states). Note that we’re five dollars lower than the best price on the east coast.

Now let’s talk about shipping and taxes.

These retailers charge $3-4 a bottle to ship at 12x to a California address. If they ship out of state, it’s at least $4-5 a bottle these days. (One retailer charges $68.65 a case to send 12 bottles to my home state of Virginia.)

Don’t forget sales tax; for California, it’s about $2.50 per bottle.

Meanwhile, we charge $5 a bottle to cover shipping and Italian taxes (IVA).

Plus, Open Tuesday bottles are sent directly from Italy, by air, in a temperature controlled environment. No hot warehouses, and no retail shelves.

For wine lovers like us, that’s another big reason to be excited about today’s offer.

I Favati - 2021 Fiano di Avellino Pietramara black label

I Favati’s 2021 Fiano black label is a mineral-laced full-flavored dry white wine from the Pietramara vineyard. It’s loaded with typical Fiano flavor notes like spicy herbs, honey, and pear. This wine has a very similar flavor profile to the 2019 Pietramara black label we offered last year. If not for the age factor, it would be very difficult to tell them apart in a blind tasting.

I Favati - 2015 Cretarossa (Aglianico) Irpina Campi Taurasini

I Favati’s 2015 Cretarossa is a full-bodied aglianico-based red wine that gives you muscle and tannins without sacrificing drinkability. It’s bright and lively, with dark red cherry and pomegranate fruit up front, followed by cocoa and anise, all in a steely, firm package. You can open it confidently with a December holiday meal, or lay it down in the cellar for 5-10 more years.

These pictures are from the Cretarossa Aglianico vineyard, near the town of Venticano.

This is I Favati on the map of southern Italy.

With the Fiano, owner Rosanna Petrozziello serves guests local roasted chestnuts, olives, and prosciutto. The I Favati website advises that Pietramara also pairs well with mixed antipasto and fish dishes “in keeping with the traditions of Mediterranean cuisine.”

I’ve had great luck pairing the Cretarossa with cotoletta sbagliata (fried pork steak). According to Carla Favati, this wine is ideal with red meat, roasted meat, game, and aged cheeses.

Open Tuesday has the lowest price in the U.S. on both of these Campania classics from I Favati.

Happy Tuesday,

Chris

How it works:

After clicking one of the links above, you’ll be able to request 1-12 bottles. Actually, that’s all you have to do!

About a week later, when we close the offer, you’ll get an email confirming how many bottles we allocated to your account. We will charge you when the wines are allocated.

We’ll do our best to allocate all the bottles you request. When there are more requests than bottles available, we’ll allocate one bottle to all requesting members before allocating a second bottle to anyone. We want as many members as possible to try these wines.

This is the 12th offer of our 2023 fall season. Through the first week of November, we plan to send offers on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

We ship in increments of 12. With 18 offers this season, there should be plenty of chances to get to 12, 24, or 36. If you don’t have an increment of 12 at the end of the fall season offers, we can hold your wines until the next offer season – spring 2023.

Wines offered in the fall will ship in late November-early December for $5 per bottle (if you have an increment of 12.) This is about the same as the price to ship coast-to-coast within the U.S. – but our wines come directly from Italy.

Once your payment method is on file, you can make future requests with just a few clicks from the offer email. If you don’t have a card on file, you can add one during your first order. Your personal financial information is protected by Stripe.
