Clara Marcelli 2109 "Irata" Pecorino

Beta Offer #2 of 18

Bottom Line Up Front - There's a good reason I wanted this to be the first white wine sold by Open Tuesday. It's the most interesting white I've tasted all year, and it's shockingly good for the price.

Fellow wine geeks,

When I first tasted this 2019 Irata, I said, "Holy cow, I love this. There's so much expressive minerality, and it's so energetic. But there's really not much fruit, huh?" Sure enough, the fruit comes around. Just allow the wine a few minutes to open up. You can give it a quick decant or just twirl the wine in your glass for a bit.

Clara Marcelli is a rising-star organic producer in the Marche region, on Italy's east coast. In fact, I’d say that Clara Marcelli, which Clara’s sons Emanuele and Daniele Colletta run today, will soon become a household name in wine geek circles. You heard it here first!

Irata is a 100 percent organic Pecorino, grown in the Offida DOCG appellation. Pecorino is a central Italian grape that, much like Clara Marcelli, is poised for a moment of fame in the wine world.

This wine is among the best Pecorino examples on the market. It’s almost impossible to find in the U.S. - unless you frequent a few wine geek establishments in Oregon, or so I’m told.

Irata gets its name for two reasons: 1) The Italian word “Ira,” (“ire” in English) reflects  the impetuous character of Pecorino; 2) “Irata” the song by Italian alt-rock band C.S.I.

Pair Irata with chicken, fish, or most hard cheeses. I also like it as an aperitivo. Just find some good salami or prosciutto for great pre-dinner snacking.

I’d suggest buying 3-6 bottles and laying a few down to age, but I'm finding it very hard to keep these unopened. A few months ago, I bought 6. Now I have none. I was too excited to have friends taste this wine.
